Ashkenazic Jews were among the last Europeans to take family names. Some German-speaking Jews took last names as early as the 17th century, but the overwhelming majority of Jews lived in Eastern Europe and did not take last names until compelled to do so. The process began in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1787 and ended in Czarist Russia in 1844.

In attempting to build modern nation-states, the authorities insisted that Jews take last names so that they could be taxed, drafted, and educated (in that order of importance). For centuries, Jewish communal leaders were responsible for collecting taxes from the Jewish population on behalf of the government, and in some cases were responsible for filling draft quotas. Education was traditionally an internal Jewish affair.

Nelson Mandela apparently underwent weapons training by Mossad agents in Ethiopia in 1962 without the Israeli secret service knowing his true identity, according to an intriguing secret letter lodged in the Israeli state archives.

The missive, revealed by the Israeli paper Haaretz two weeks after the death of the iconic South African leader, said Mandela was instructed in the use of weapons and sabotage techniques, and was encouraged to develop Zionist sympathies.

I was deeply moved watching on Television the video of Johnny Clegg with Tata Madiba. Songs like these make me tingle. They reduce my feelings and emotions to basics, the kind of basics that both Sugars  and Bitters  you with the memories of the promises most South Africans held closer than the breath in their hearts  in the forgotten days of The Transition.

Those were my student days (1978-1986) and the years just after. They were years of trying to make a Idealist Statements  of my unique South African A Experience (and failing). And knowing that this kind of music succeeded, especially with its visuals of Madiba dancing with, oh, anyone. He had time for anyone who came across…
